The top 3 most expensive homes ever sold in the United States include 2 from California and 1 from New York. It may surprise you that Jeff Bezos owns the second-place contender.
Third place belongs to The Chartwell Estate from the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles. The home was originally listed at $350 Million in 2017 and sold in 2019 for $150 Million. Appraising a home like this would have been an incredible challenge, especially considering the $200 Million dollar list to sales price difference.
Second place was purchased by Jeff Bezos for $165 Million dollars. The home has 13,000 square feet. 13,000 square feet sure is a lot, but I have appraised home this big, but I was not able to give them a value of $165 Million, unfortunately.
The most expensive home ever sold in the United States was a condo, yup a condo. The home was the Penthouse of 220 Central Park South, a residential tower in Manhattan. The home sold for a measly $239,958,219. The buyer of the home is Ken Griffin a Billionaire hedge fund manager.
To put these sale prices into perspective, the most expensive home ever sold in Utah was Riverbend Ranch near Park City that sold for $32.5 Million dollars. On the other end of the spectrum Buckingham Palace is estimated to be worth somewhere around $3 Billion (with an additional $2.15 Billion in artwork and furniture). The White House is not worth nearly that much at an estimated value of about $398 Million. The most expensive private residence, The Antilia Building, is located in India with an estimated value of around $2 Billion. This home is basically an entire high rise on a 1.12 acre site that used to be home to an orphanage. I guess the owner needed to displace the orphanage to make room for their 168 car garage and 80 seat theater.
