Would You Buy a Haunted House?

Writer: Jeff JorgensenJeff Jorgensen

Wow, when researching for this blog, I was surprised by how much information there is on this subject. In this blog, I will summarize some of my findings and will provide a few links to fun stories and interesting studies. Most of the following information is from realestatewitch.com.

In this hot market, 73% of Americans say they would consider purchasing a haunted house, but 52% would want a discount. It could be hard for a buyer in Utah to know a home they are interested in is haunted, since the Seller's Disclosure form does not address this issue. Those who report having lived in a haunted house, 48% say they learned about it from the previous owner. If that's true, you have about a 50/50 chance of knowing you are buying a haunted house.

Interestingly, 44% say they have lived in a haunted house, which is up from 25% in 2020. The surveyor's surmise that this may be due to people spending more time at home due to the pandemic. That may be true since most of those who report having lived in a haunted house say supernatural events have increased since the pandemic. Even more interesting is that 63% say they knew the home was haunted before moving in.

Ghosts are not the scariest aspect of buying a home, in fact only 5% or respondents say that it is. Here's a list of scarier things: Mold, foundation issues, termites, asbestos, water damage, pests, leaky roof, outdated electrical system, lead paint, leaky basement, old plumbing, radon, broken furnace, or broken central air conditioning.

Almost half of Americans would rather purchase a haunted house than live within one mile of a waste management facility, or near the scene of a violent crime, or near a former meth lab or within a mile of a prison, among other things.

Come to think of it, I live near the scene of a former violent crime and prison. At least my house is not haunted. Being the only owner of the home probably helps with that.

If you have any spooky stories, please share in the comments. Happy Halloween!

I worked with them as the appraisal coordinator for my lending institution for three years and they are great to work with. Not a corporation but a family owned business which is nice and always willing to explain anything I had questions about.

Our law firm, Heideman & Associates, hired Jeff Jorgensen to work as an expert witness on a construction defect matter. Jeff was very professional, quick to respond to our inquiry and communications, and did an excellent job for our case. We wouldn't hesitate to use Jeff for future expert needs and we highly recommend him to anyone looking for a reliable, professional appraiser!
