Imagine with me, that you are going to get an appraisal. In most cases you want your appraisal to come in at a good high value. That is not the case when the tax assessor is giving your home a value. Now imagine that your home that should be worth somewhere around $302,000 in 2019 comes in with a value of $987 million dollars. That near billion-dollar value sure would come with a hefty taxable value.
This is not just some imaginary scenario, but actually occurred in Wasatch County Utah. You can imagine how surprised the owner of the home would be, but the impact was even further reaching than that. According to The Desert News, at the beginning of an emergency Wasatch County Counsel meeting, Council Chairman Danny Goode said a brief prayer, “Dear God, help us all”. The meeting on November 4th was set to address the clerical error that would cause a vast change in the county's budget. The biggest impact is likely on the school district’s budget, as they will have $4.4 million less to work with.
The error was likely made when an employee dropped their phone onto their keyboard. The county has stated that they ”deeply regret” the error and are reviewing policies and procedures to ensure nothing like this ever happens again.
